The Countryside on Your Doorstep
Stillness settles over the meadow as the sun slips down towards the horizon. The horses in the paddock graze unhurriedly, and on one of the fenceposts asharp-eyed falcon sits surveying the scene. Then, just as I finish my evening coffee, the flock emerges from the edge of the wood. The first few animals step cautiously into the open, pause to listen and then start nibbling the grass. They are joined by more and more, and before long there are so many I can hardly count them. It’s a magical feeling to see a large herd of red deer like this, in their
natural element. They’re majestic, but there’s something vulnerable about them as well. A cow lowing in a nearby underlines the silence.
